Southern Spain Road Trip: An Unforgettable Journey from Malaga to Cadiz

A Southern Spain road trip is an experience like no other. The landscape, culture, and historical charm make it a perfect getaway. I had always dreamed of taking a road trip through this beautiful region, and when the opportunity arose, I couldn’t resist. Instead of taking the faster motorways, I chose the scenic route to fully immerse myself in the stunning surroundings. Although the journey took a bit longer, the incredible views along the way made it worth every extra minute. Here’s a guide to my unforgettable road trip through southern Spain, starting in Malaga and finishing in Cadiz.

Can I Use My UK Driving License in Spain?

Driving in Spain with a UK License

One of the first things that crossed my mind before embarking on my road trip was whether I could use my UK driving license in Spain. For those of you wondering the same, the answer is yes! You can absolutely use your UK driving license in Spain, provided it is valid and up-to-date. Spain allows UK nationals to drive with their UK-issued license without needing to exchange it for a Spanish one. However, it’s important to be aware of a few key things:

  1. Valid License: Ensure that your UK driving license is valid and hasn’t expired.
  2. Driving Side: Spain drives on the right side of the road, which can be a bit tricky if you are used to driving on the left.
  3. Road Rules: Familiarize yourself with the rules of the road in Spain. For instance, Spain has strict traffic laws, especially regarding speeding and alcohol limits. Fines for violations can be hefty.

If you’re renting a car, it’s always best to confirm the details with the rental company to ensure everything is in order. For my road trip, I rented a car through Helle Hollis Car Hire in Malaga and opted for enhanced insurance for an additional fee(please check the rates when booking your car). This gave us peace of mind, knowing that in the event of an accident or any issues, everything was covered. If you decide to rent through this company, be sure to discuss insurance options and ask for additional recommendations for your trip. Staff at Helle Hollis Car Hire is super friendly and always happy to help.

The Best Way to Travel Through Southern Spain

Why Rent a Car for Your Spanish Road Trip?

When you embark on a road trip in Southern Spain, renting a car is the most convenient and flexible option. Public transportation in this region can be limited and time-consuming, especially if you plan to explore smaller villages or remote locations. Having your own car allows you to travel at your own pace, take scenic detours, and fully enjoy the beauty of Andalusia.

Scenic Route vs. Motorways: A Must-Do Experience

While Spain’s motorways (autopistas) are fast and efficient, they often bypass the charming villages and breathtaking landscapes that make Southern Spain so special. By taking the scenic route, you’ll get to experience everything from coastal views to majestic mountains and rolling hills. The journey will take longer, but trust me, the stunning vistas and authentic Spanish towns make it all worthwhile. Whether you’re driving through the Sierra de Grazalema mountains or along the Costa del Sol, there’s so much to see.

First Stop: Estepona – A Beautiful Coastal Town

Discovering the Charm of Estepona

Our first stop on this incredible road trip was Estepona, located just an hour’s drive from Malaga. Estepona is a charming town along the Costa del Sol, known for its whitewashed buildings, vibrant flowers, and stunning beaches. Renting a car from Malaga to Estepona was definitely the best option, as public transport would have taken far longer.

Estepona is a perfect blend of traditional Andalusian architecture and modern amenities. The town is renowned for its beautiful flower-lined streets, with colorful geraniums and bougainvillea hanging from the balconies. The cobbled streets and small plazas are perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the town’s marina offers a lovely place to relax and watch the boats.

Things to Do in Estepona

  • Estepona Old Town: Wander through the narrow streets of the Old Town, which is filled with character and charm. The whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers create a picturesque setting.
  • Plaza de las Flores: This central square is a popular meeting spot where you can relax, enjoy a coffee, and watch the world go by.
  • Beaches: Estepona is famous for its wide, sandy beaches. You can spend a few hours soaking up the sun or even try water sports like windsurfing or kayaking.
  • Tapas Bars: Don’t miss out on the local cuisine. Estepona has many tapas bars where you can enjoy freshly made Spanish dishes, including calamari, Iberian ham, and grilled fish.

Exploring San Roque: A Village with Andalusian Charm

San Roque: A Quaint Andalusian Village

After spending a relaxing morning in Estepona, we drove towards San Roque, a quaint village located near the coast. San Roque is known for its traditional Andalusian charm and its cobbled streets that wind up and down the hillside. The village is full of history, and you can see it in its ancient churches, whitewashed houses, and quiet courtyards.

One of the highlights of San Roque is its location. From the village, you can enjoy a stunning view of Gibraltar, the famous British overseas territory, and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. It’s an excellent spot for taking in the scenery, especially during sunset when the sky turns golden.

Where to stay in San Roque?

Me and my friend had a pleasure of staying in this charming accommodation located in a convenient proximity to all must see places as well as restaurants and bars – El Conventillo de San Roque – click to BOOK. Accommodation offers rooms with fully equipped kitchen, including coffee machine, toaster etc. We stayed in the deluxe one-bedroom apartment, which has a beautiful bathtub, that can be used after a long day of traveling to run a bath and relax. Where to eat in San Roque?

Taberna Casa Julia

The restaurant that me and my friend visited was not on our list of places to eat(I’m sure that everyone has “places to eat on holiday” list…), but the one that was on it was closed, so this was a hidden gem that we found while looking for a new place to eat. It turned out to be a great spot to eat with a wide choice of tapas. We of course ordered too much, as always… Dish that I can recommend is chicken curry, it was lovely and fresh as well as all the other tapas on the menu!

Vejer de la Frontera: A Magical Hilltop Village

Exploring the Beauty of Vejer de la Frontera

Next on our road trip was Vejer de la Frontera, a stunning hilltop village located in the province of Cádiz. This village is one of the most picturesque in Andalusia, with winding streets, whitewashed buildings, and spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It’s an ideal spot for those who love history, culture, and stunning landscapes.

Vejer de la Frontera is a great place to spend an afternoon. Wander through its narrow, cobbled streets, visit its historic landmarks, and enjoy a meal at one of its traditional Andalusian restaurants.

It’s a great spot to relax, grab a coffee, or enjoy a drink at one of the beach bars. If you’re into surfing, this beach is also famous for its waves, making it a popular destination for surfers from all over the world.

Final Destination: Cadiz – A Timeless Coastal City

Discovering the Oldest City in Western Europe

After a scenic drive through the Andalusian countryside, we finally reached Cadiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. With its rich history, beautiful coastline, and vibrant atmosphere, Cadiz is a must-visit for any traveler exploring southern Spain.

Things to Do in Cadiz

  • Cadiz Cathedral: Start your visit at the iconic Cádiz Cathedral, an impressive Baroque building that dominates the city’s skyline. Be sure to climb the tower for stunning views of the city and the sea.
