Portugal in October

October can be an amazing month to visit Portugal. Sometimes, it will still feel like summer, but with far less people visiting, which makes the exploring a lot more enjoyable. Regardless of where you chose to go to, you are still guaranteed to have a good weather and longer days. I personally visit Portugal in October on regular basis and can honestly say, the you will not be disappointed, this goes for Algarves, Lisbon or Porto.

Portugal in Autumn

October can see some rain, particularly in the northern regions and in Lisbon, but it’s not typically heavy. Sometimes it feels a little bit humid, but trust me, the weather is still a lot better than in UK. When I visited Lagos Portugal in October 2023, we still have temperatures going up to 28 degrees.

Portugal in October temperature

Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) in most parts of the country, while evenings can be cooler, around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). However, like I mentioned before, you can get warmer days like I did. Weather is still warm enough to swim in the ocean.

Portugal in October where to go

There are a few places worth visiting, depending on what you a looking for. Algarve will be perfect for a relaxing holiday, hikes and beach picnics. Lisbon and Porto are ideal for short, or longer city break, filled with culture, beautiful architecture and more importantly great weather in October. Everyone will find something that they would love in all of them, ultimately it is up to you if you would like to visit just one destination, or have a longer trip and tick them all off from your list.

Lisbon in October

I really love visiting Lisbon in October. Not only the weather is still beautiful, but it is also my birthday month, so it makes it extra special. Evenings are still warm, although I would recommend packing a thin jumper, allowing you to continue exploring the city and admire the lights from multiple viewpoints.

Porto in October

Visiting Porto in October is a wonderful choice, as the city offers a mix of rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and vibrant local life, all with fewer tourists and mild autumn weather. There is nothing better than having an amazing meal with tasty glass of Port wine.

Algarve in October

Algarve, especially Lagos is my most favourite place to visit in October. During this time is very peaceful, weather is still amazing, last year we were getting about 28th degrees at the beginning of October, days are still long and most importantly, there is far less people. October is still warm enough for surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. The waves are particularly good for surfing at this time of year. Enjoy the cooler temperatures for hiking and biking along the coastal trails and through scenic countryside. The Algarve is renowned for its fresh seafood. Try dishes like cataplana (seafood stew), grilled sardines, and octopus salad. Please refrain from eating fish and seafood on Monday, simply because it might be what has been left over from the weekend. I have some more information about Lagos and Faro on my blog already:

What to wear Portugal October

Bring layers to accommodate the cooler evenings and occasional rain. Don’t forget swimwear and sun protection for beach days. I have visited all these places in October and worn summer clothes with success, followed by a thin jumper/hoodie in the evening if it was getting a little bit nippy.
