When is the best time to visit Agra?
I find that the best times to visit Agra are during the winter months, specifically from October to March. The weather is cool and pleasant, making it enjoyable to explore the city. This is when you can truly appreciate the beauty of the Taj Mahal in India and other historical sites without the heat weighing you down. The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, can be quite humid and rainy, so I suggest to avoid these months.
How to get to Agra?
When I planned my trip to Agra, I found several transportation options to choose from. The most popular ways to reach Agra include traveling by train, bus, or car. Trains are a fantastic choice for a comfortable journey. India has a well-connected rail network, making it easy to book tickets to Agra. Buses are also available for those looking for a budget-friendly option. There are numerous private and government buses that run regularly between major cities and Agra. I would not recommend hiring a car and driving it as India can be very hectic and driving rules in India are completely different!
I decided to book a private transfer that would pick me up from the New Delhi airport and dropped me off at my hotel in Agra. Things to do in Agra
*Before I dive into details of placed that are must see in Agra, I wanted to take the opportunity to share a few tips based on my experience. If you would like to make the most out of the Agra trip, I would highly recommend booking a guided tour each time you want to visit places. This is not only going to save you time, but also keep you well informed and safe. I have never booked guides in the past, but after doing it in India I can truly say that it was the best thing I have ever done. They have shared a lot of history as well as recommended places to eat etc. It is also nice to have somebody to take a photo for you! 🙂 If you do decide to book a guided tour, you will be allowed free time to walk around and admire the visited places, and when you do, please do take your time. It is your trip and you need to take as much time as you feel needed to create memories and to make sure you have seen it all properly. Also, the best time to visit Taj Mahal is first thing in the morning (you can start queuing before sunrise), this way there is a chance that you will avoid huge crowds and have many beautiful photo opportunities. Taj Mahal also reflects the sun light, the later you come, the hotter it might be. When I visited Agra, one of the first things on my list was the Taj Mahal in India. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a true symbol of love. Its beautiful white marble glistens under the sun and offers a breathtaking sight. I took my time exploring its intricate carvings and reflecting pools. Agra Fort
Next, I explored Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage site. The stunning architecture truly amazed me. The fort’s red sandstone walls towered impressively over the landscape. Inside, I found beautiful gardens and intricate designs that tell stories of a bygone era. Walking through its halls, I could imagine the Mughal emperors who once called this place home. Agra Fort is a must-see attraction that adds depth to my understanding of Agra, India.
Baby Taj
I also discovered the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the Baby Taj. This site is a hidden gem in Agra. The delicate designs and marble inlays captivated me. It’s a perfect example of Mughal architecture.
Mehtab Bagh
After that, I headed to Mehtab Bagh for a stunning sunset view of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River. I marveled at the reflection of this iconic monument in the water. Visiting the Tomb of Akbar the Great was another highlight. Its massive structure and beautiful gardens left a lasting impression on me.
Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center
Animal lovers should not miss a visit to the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center. This sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates elephants that have been subjected to neglect and abuse. Here, you can learn about their stories, witness their daily routine. It’s a heartwarming experience that also raises awareness about animal welfare. The entry fee of 2000 rupees goes entirely towards preservation of elephants. The Center is around 45 minutes drive from Agra, so it is a good idea to book it in advance. Driver will pick you up from your hotel and drop you back off after your tour. Below activity includes a pick up from your Agra hotel, transfer in AC car to the Center, and drop off back at your hotel in Agra. The entry fee is not included.
